# Kelmscott House

Not to be confused with [Kelmscott Manor](https://heritage.humanists.uk/kelmscott-manor/), Kelmscott House was the London home of designer and socialist [William Morris](https://heritage.humanists.uk/william-morris/) from October 1878 until his death in October 1896. It is Grade II listed by Historic England, and home today to the William Morris Society and a small museum.







Originally called The Retreat, Morris renamed the house after the Oxfordshire village of Kelmscott, where he had lived at Kelmscott Manor from June 1871. During the eighteen years Morris lived at Kelmscott House, he ran his manufacturing company, Morris and Company, founded the Kelmscott Press, and held Socialist League meetings in the Coach House.
